Egypt supplying Jordan with energy

Egypt will provide energy to Iraq via Jordan.

According to the Egyptian Minister of Electricity, Mohamed Shaker, Egypt has agreed to provide Iraq with 700 megawatts of electricity by expanding the electricity network with Jordan in a $2.2 billion project. The project is part of a comprehensive agreement signed by Egypt and Iraq in December 2020, and it is expected to be completed in 2024.

He said that about 500 megawatts will be added to a joint network linking Egypt and Jordan, bringing the total capacity to 2000 megawatts. He also said that the link between Jordan and Iraq will be built in two phases, with the first phase consisting of strengthening Egyptian supplies to Jordan and the second phase consisting of building 300 kilometres of supply lines from Jordan to Iraq.

"The overall cost of the project is estimated at 35 billion Iraqi pounds ($2.2 billion)," he said, "which will allow Egypt to supply Iraq with 700 megawatts via Jordan." Egypt's electric power capacity is at 35,000 megawatts.
